Lesotho Health System Strengthening Initiative
In partnership with the Ministry of Health of Lesotho and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the Foreign Mission Board is launching a comprehensive initiative to transform Lesotho’s healthcare system. This multi-faceted project aims to address critical gaps in healthcare delivery and improve the health outcomes of the Lesotho people.
Key Objectives:
- Workforce Development: Recruit, train, and retain a skilled healthcare workforce, including physicians, nurses, midwives, and village health workers.
- Infrastructure Enhancement: Construct and renovate clinics, maternity wards, and staff housing to ensure adequate facilities for quality care.
- Supply Chain Optimization: Strengthen the supply chain to ensure reliable access to essential medicines, medical equipment, laboratory support, and supplies.
- Systems Strengthening: Implement effective health information systems, quality improvement programs, and disease surveillance mechanisms.
- Community Engagement: Foster collaboration with local communities to promote health education, preventive care, and early disease detection.
Expected Outcomes:
- Increased access to quality healthcare services: Ensure that every person in Lesotho, regardless of location or socioeconomic status, can receive timely and appropriate care.
- Reduced maternal and child mortality rates: Improve maternal and child health outcomes through enhanced prenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and postnatal support.
- Improved management of communicable and non-communicable diseases: Strengthen prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of significant health threats, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, hypertension, and diabetes.
